Key Partnerships

Notable banks, payment providers, and institutions that have partnered with Ripple over the years.

SBI Holdings / SBI Ripple Asia

Ripple's longest-running and most significant institutional relationship is with SBI Holdings, a major Japanese financial services group. The two companies formed a joint venture, SBI Ripple Asia, to promote Ripple's payment technology across Japan and the broader Asian market. This partnership is a large part of why Japan developed one of the world's largest and most active retail XRP-holding communities, and SBI's brokerage arm, SBI VC Trade, has long been one of the most prominent XRP-supporting exchanges in Japan.

MoneyGram

Ripple invested in MoneyGram, one of the world's largest money transfer companies, and the two piloted On-Demand Liquidity starting in 2019 for a portion of MoneyGram's cross-border payment flows. The partnership ended in 2021, with MoneyGram citing uncertainty from the SEC lawsuit against Ripple as a contributing factor.

Santander

Spanish banking group Santander used Ripple's messaging technology to build One Pay FX, an international payments app for retail customers, launched in the late 2010s — one of the earliest large-bank consumer-facing products built on Ripple's payment infrastructure. Santander's use of Ripple's technology was generally understood to rely on RippleNet's messaging layer rather than XRP-based settlement.

American Express and Santander cross-border pilot

In 2018, American Express and Santander piloted using Ripple's network for a specific business-to-business cross-border payment corridor between the U.S. and U.K., aimed at demonstrating faster settlement than legacy correspondent banking for that use case.

Standard Chartered and other early RippleNet members

A range of other banks and payment providers — including Standard Chartered, among others — joined RippleNet in its early growth years as network participants, primarily using its messaging and settlement infrastructure.

A note on how partnerships are often mischaracterized

Media coverage has often conflated "a bank uses RippleNet" with "a bank uses XRP," but as explained in RippleNet, the two are separable — many RippleNet partnerships have used Ripple's messaging and settlement technology without necessarily adopting XRP-based On-Demand Liquidity for settlement. Understanding which specific product a given partnership actually uses requires looking past the headline to the details of the announcement.
